A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance and is an excellent way to replace missing teeth. A bridge consists of two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth) and are attached to pontics (artificial teeth), filling the gap created by one or more missing teeth.
There are several types of materials used for bridges, of which our office most commonly uses zirconia. Your dentist can help decide which material best suits your personal needs.
Getting a bridge requires at least two appointments. It is very similar to a crown procedure.
Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate scans that will be used to create your custom bridge. While the teeth are numb, the dentist will prepare the two anchoring teeth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the bridge. A mold will also be used to create a temporary bridge which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new crown is fabricated by a trusted dental laboratory. Once these details are accomplished, your temporary bridge will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly.
At your second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.
Your dentist will give you instructions on how to care for your new bridge, including proper oral hygiene practices and any precautions to take. Good oral hygiene homecare (brushing and flossing), eating habits, and regular dental cleanings and check-ups will aid in the life of your new bridge. Your dentist will continue to follow-up on your bridge at your routine dental appointments.
