Dental crowns are protective caps that are placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and improve its appearance. They are often recommended when a tooth is significantly weakened due to decay, fractures, large fillings, or root canal treatment.
There are several types of materials used for crowns, of which our office uses zirconia, ceramic and gold. Your dentist can help decide which material best suits your personal needs.
A crown procedure requires at least two appointments.
In your first appointment, while the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the crown. A digital scan of the tooth will be taken that will serve as a model to create a custom crown that fits your tooth perfectly.
While your permanent crown is being fabricated in a trusted dental laboratory (which usually takes a couple of weeks), a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it and maintain its function and appearance.
At your second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.
Your dentist will give you instructions on how to care for your new crown, including proper oral hygiene practices and any precautions to take. Good oral hygiene homecare (brushing and flossing), eating habits, and regular dental cleanings and check-ups will aid in the life of your new crown. Your dentist will continue to follow-up on your crown at your routine dental appointments.
