nightguards

Nightguards are often referred to as bruxism appliances or occlusal splints in the dental world.  They are specially designed dental appliances that provide essential protection for patients who grind or clench their teeth, a condition known as bruxism.  By placing a durable yet comfortable barrier between the upper and lower teeth, nightguards prevent the direct contact that leads to tooth wear and fractures.  Additionally, they help reduce the strain on jaw muscles and joints, alleviating symptoms such as jaw pain, headaches, and even earaches.  Custom-fitted by your dentist, nightguards ensure optimal comfort and effectiveness, promoting better oral health and a more restful night's sleep.

Reasons for nightguards:

  • Protects teeth.
  • Reduces muscle and jaw pain.
  • Alleviates headaches and migraines.
  • Prevents temporomandibular disorders (TMD).
  • Promotes better sleep.

What types of nightguards are there?

Nightguards can be worn on your upper or lower teeth, which your dentist will decide which type of appliance best suits your custom situation.  These appliances are typically fabricated out of acrylic material (a type of plastic) with a metal framework and a couple clasps to fit around your teeth.  Sometimes there is no metal component to the appliance.  Your dentist will choose a custom design that is appropriate for you.

How many appointments does it take to get a nightguard?

Getting a nightguard involves two dental visits.  In your first appointment, we will take either an impression (mold) or a digital scan of your teeth.  We can take this impression or scan during a dental cleaning and/or check-up appointment.  This appointment is typically short.

Then, a trusted dental laboratory will make your custom nightguard.  It can typically be ready for pick-up in 10-14 business days.

Your second dental appointment is to try-in and pick-up your nightguard.  Your dentist will quickly confirm the custom fit and verify you are biting evenly on your nightguard in this appointment.

How do I care for my nightguard?

You will be given care instructions for your new nightguard.  You will also be provided with a case to store your nightguard in during the day.  Proper cleaning of your nightguard, good oral hygiene homecare, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new nightguard.
