Veneers are a popular cosmetic dental treatment used to improve the appearance of teeth. They are thin, custom-made shells designed to cover the front surface of teeth, enhancing their colour, shape, size, and/or length. Veneers are custom-made from high-quality ceramic material that provides a natural-looking appearance and is resistant to staining.
There are two types of veneers, porcelain and composite veneers (cosmetic bonding).
Getting veneers involves at least two appointments. There may be additional visits required after the final appointment to make minor aesthetic adjustments.
In your first appointment, while your teeth are numb, the dentist will remove a small amount of enamel (the outermost layer of tooth) to accommodate the veneer. A digital scan of the tooth will be taken that will serve as a model to create a custom veneer that fits your tooth perfectly.
While your permanent veneers are being fabricated in a trusted dental laboratory (which usually takes a couple of weeks), temporary veneers are placed over the prepared tooth to protect it and maintain its function and appearance.
At your second appointment, your temporary veneers will be removed and the teeth will be cleaned. Your dentist will verify the fit and colour of your new veneers before permanently attaching them.
Your dentist will give you instructions on how to care for your new veneers, including proper oral hygiene practices and any precautions to take. Good oral hygiene homecare (brushing and flossing), eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new veneers. Your dentist will continue to follow-up on your veneers at your routine dental cleanings.
