A denture is a removable dental appliance and a solution for missing teeth and surrounding tissue. They are made to closely resemble your natural teeth and may even enhance your smile.
There are three types of dentures - complete dentures, partial dentures, and implant-supported dentures.
A complete denture is a removable dental appliance. It is a solution to not having any natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaw, or both. It is designed to restore the function, aesthetics, and oral health of individuals who have lost all of their teeth in one or both dental arches.
A complete denture can be either “conventional” or “immediate.”
A partial denture is also a removable dental appliance, but it is a solution for someone missing some, but not all, of their natural teeth. They often have clasps or attachments that anchor onto the remaining teeth, helping to keep the denture in place during chewing and speaking.
There are two types of partial dentures, acrylic or metal framework.
Implant-supported dentures are a type of denture that is supported by and attached to implants. Unlike regular dentures, which rest on the gums, implant-supported dentures are anchored by dental implants, providing a more stable and secure fit. They allow for increased chewing efficiency, better speech clarity, more comfort and bone preservation.
The process of getting dentures requires several appointments, usually over a period of several weeks. Highly accurate impressions (molds), digital scans, and measurements are taken and used to create your custom denture. Several “try-in” appointments may be necessary to ensure proper shape, colour, and fit.
At the final appointment, your dentist will precisely adjust and place the completed denture, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit. Dentures may also require periodic adjustments and maintenance to ensure proper fit and function.
You will be given care instructions for your new dentures. Patients are typically advised to remove their dentures at night and to clean them regularly. Proper cleaning of your denture, good oral hygiene, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new dentures.
Dentures are very durable appliances and will last many years but may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear.
