Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a common procedure used to save a tooth that is infected or damaged. It involves removing the infected or inflamed pulp tissue (nerve) from inside the tooth and sealing it to prevent further infection. When root canal treatment is necessary, it is the only possible treatment option to save a tooth.
A root canal may sometimes take multiple appointments, depending on the tooth. In a root canal procedure, the dentist will carefully remove the infected or damaged pulp, clean and shape the root canal itself, and disinfect it thoroughly. The next step involves filling the root canals and pulp chamber with a material called gutta-percha to seal them off and prevent further infection. Finally, the tooth is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.
Post-treatment care instructions will be provided, and a follow-up appointment may be scheduled to ensure proper healing. Most often a crown is recommended after a root canal treatment. This depends on if your tooth is in your bite and your bruxism (clenching and grinding) habits.
